New Acquisition at the William Morris Gallery

The Friends of the William Morris Gallery have purchased for the Gallery a wonderful group of early tiles designed and made by William Morris and William De Morgan. The group consists of six tiles:

William Morris/William De Morgan Tiles - William Morris Gallery

– Three Sunflower tiles – one made for Morris & Co, and two De Morgan interpretations.
– Two Artichoke tiles – one made for Morris & Co and one red lustre version made by De Morgan.
– Tulip & Trellis, designed by William Morris and painted for Morris & Co.

The tiles come from the very important collection of the late Jon Catleugh who was collecting De Morgan tiles for 60 years until his death in January 2009. Jon wrote the seminal book on De Morgan tiles first published in 1983.

The Firm’s single tiles were hugely popular. Great quantities were produced for customers all over the country, bringing in a steady source of income. The new acquisition is now on display in the Gallery.

TACS hopes to visit the gallery in 2011.
